FURNITURE RESTORATION CASE STUDY
Upholstered Piano Stool
Sad and tired
The upholstery on this old piano stool was very tired looking.
The fabric was stained and faded. The trim was also frayed and coming away from its frame.
Weak construction
However, inside and underneath there were bigger problems.
The original construction was lacking any upholstery webbing, which went a long way in explaining the damage the stool had suffered over the years.
Colour matching
One of the tenets of good furniture restoration is to keep as much of the original piece as possible. But the two interior panels were too far gone.
A new piece of plywood was stained to match the originals.
Reupholstering
Once the old upholstery was painstakingly removed, new webbing was attached to the top of the seat.
New upholstery foam, calico and wadding were added before it was finished in the client’s choice of new fabric.
Fit for purpose
Once fully reassembled, the entire stool was giving a fresh coat of antique mahogany wax.
Not only does the interior now look better, it is ready to withstand years of further use.
Raring to go
Here is the piano stool completely reupholstered, with a beautiful claret trim to complement the checked fabric.
With the addition of webbing, it is stronger than before - and also more comfortable. And it’s all set for its next recital.
